What is a quit zone?

A Quit Zone is a clearly marked outdoor area on NHS hospital grounds where adults aged 18 and over can use tobacco alternatives such as vapes or e-cigarettes as part of their journey to quit smoking. These areas are:

  • Clearly signed designated outdoor spaces for the use of vapes
  • Away from main entrances, windows and public view
  • Free from smoking and cigarette litter
  • Designed to support – not encourage- vaping

Quit Zones are not smoking areas. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on NHS hospital grounds. By respecting these spaces, you’re helping us create a healthier, safer environment for everyone.

Who Can Use a Quit Zone?

Quit Zones are for adults aged 18+ who are:

  • Trying to quit smoking
  • Using a vape or e-cigarette as a quit aid
  • May be receiving support from NHS Treating Tobacco Dependency (TTD) teams or Local Stop Smoking teams

Why Do We Have Quit Zones?

Quit Zones are part of our wider goal to make Cheshire and Merseyside smokefree by 2030. They help:

Why Quitting Smoking Matters

Every cigarette causes harm.

There is no safe level of smoking. Even cutting down while continuing to smoke still puts your health at serious risk.

Quitting smoking completely is the best thing you can do for your health. Using a vape alongside smoking is not recommended. To get the full health benefits, you need to stop smoking completely.
